New Zealand was the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote. This took place on 19 September 1893, when Governor Lord Glasgow signed the amendment to the Electoral Act. From that moment on, women were able to vote in parliamentary elections, although they did not gain the right to stand for election until 1919.

Among European countries, Finland (then the Grand Duchy of Finland) was a pioneer, becoming the first country in the world in 1906 to grant women both the right to vote and the right to stand for election.

In Poland, women were granted full electoral rights (both the right to vote and the right to stand for election) on 28 November 1918 under Józef Piłsudski’s decree on the electoral system.
